ABOUT US

Big Apple Recreational Sports (BARS) is a community-focused, New York City-based, nonprofit sports organization for LGBTQIA+ people and their allies. Founded in 2007, we provide inclusive, low-cost, social and advanced leagues, across four sports (Dodgeball, Kickball, Bowling, & Pickleball). Rooted in philanthropy and connection, we value each player for who they are and what they bring to the community. With 2,500 active players every season, we proudly stand as the largest LGBTQIA+ social sports organization in New York.

Our Open and Women, Trans, & Non-Binary (WTNB+) divisions remain committed to creating an inclusive space for all participants, who want to play competitive sports in an athletic environment free of harassment, discrimination and drama.

OUR MISSION

To foster a community of players that extends beyond the lanes, courts, and fields.

Our Support of the Trans Community

At Big Apple Recreational Sports, we believe in creating a welcoming, inclusive, and affirming space for everyone—on and off the field. We want to be unequivocally clear: we stand in full support of the trans community.

Our Women, Trans, and Non-Binary (WTNB) Division was created to embody this commitment to actively creating space for our Trans and Non-binary community members to thrive. Sports should be a space for joy, connection, and empowerment, not exclusion.

Big Apple Recreational Sports is proud to be a community where trans rights are human rights, and where inclusion isn’t just a value—it’s a promise. We encourage players to join the division (WTNB or Open) that aligns with their identity and where they feel most comfortable.
