Big Apple Kickball Now Recruiting For Spring 2026 Paid Referees

Big Apple Kickball is currently accepting ref-interest applications. Looking for a way to get involved with Kickball without playing? Or perhaps you are playing and would love to ref other leagues within the season?
Kickball games require two different types of referees.
-
Head refs, who stand behind home base and make all major calls (such as when a ball is a strike, etc.)
- Base refs, who stand next to first base and/or third base. These refs make calls about safe and out plays from within the infield. They also assist the head ref with setup.
Games are played throughout Manhattan, with seven different league options at social and advanced levels.
No previous experience is required. All individuals interested in refereeing, regardless of previous experience, must attend one of the virtual training sessions (details below) and pass a subsequent open book quiz. Each training session is one hour and will include a brief training on inclusive practices and sexual harassment.
Applicants will be invited to a hands-on training after completing the virtual training and successfully passing the online quiz. The dates of these sessions will coincide with Open Play, Newbie and Scouting nights across BARS’s two divisions (Open and WTNB+).
Benefits
- $25 paid to the referee, per game
- Vet status for the league you are working, after reffing a minimum of six games
- An active voice in BARS as a member of the extended leadership team
- Introduction and exposure to the game of kickball
